Did you hear the one where Canada beat New Zealand in rugby?

Now you have. At the Sevens World Series stop in Tokyo, Canada finished fourth, but won an important confidence-builder for the men’s sevens rugby team after beating New Zealand 19-15 in the quarterfinals.

It was the first time ever Canada beat rugby’s most admired nation. Mike Fuailefau, John Moonlight and Conor Trainor scored tries for Canada.

That momentum however, didn’t carry into the semifinals for Team Canada in Japan, which lost to eventual Tokyo Sevens champion England 14-5.

In the third place match, another rugby powerhouse, Fiji, lumbered back from a 12-point deficit to beat Canada 21-19.

England beat South Africa 21-14 in the final to lift the cup.
