MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Connor Alexander tossed a career-best seven innings and struck out a career-high seven batters to lead Memphis to a 6-2 win against No. 20 Houston on Saturday. The victory clinched a second consecutive American Athletic Conference series win.
Houston held a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth before the Tigers took their first lead of the game with four runs on one hit and three Houston errors in the inning.
The Cougars’ shortstop made errors that allowed Brandon Montgomery and Corey Chafin to reach base with no outs.
With one out Darien Tubbs singled to score Chafin and tie the game. Zach Schritenthal then drove in Jake Overbey with a safety squeeze bunt. Houston pitcher Seth Romero made an errant throw on a pickoff attempt that allowed Tubbs to score from third. The final run came home on a sacrifice fly by Kane Barrow.
