MARINERS NOTES:

  • Seattle won its 9th consecutive Opening Day game (2007-current).

o    It is T2nd longest opening game streak in MLB history (Boston Beaneaters, 10, 1887-96).

  • Felix Hernandez made his 8th career Opening Day start, his 7th consecutive.

o    The 7-straight Opening Day starts extends his Mariners record.

  • Felix Hernandez is 6-0 with a 1.49 ERA (10 ER, 60.1 IP) with 62 strikeouts in 8 Opening Day starts.

o    His 6 Opening Day wins are T7th in MLB (since 1914) with Roger Clemens, Juan Marichal, Greg Maddux, Dwight Gooden & Wes Ferrell.

o    Recorded 10 strikeouts today, his third career Opening Day start with 10+ strikeouts.

§  Also: 12 in 2007 vs OAK & 11 in 2014 at LAA.

§  Becomes the 4th pitcher in MLB history (since 1914) with 3+ Opening Day starts with 10-or-more strikeouts: Randy Johnson (4), Pedro Martinez (3), Bob Gibson (3), Felix Hernandez (3)

  • Felix Hernandez is 5-1 with a 1.07 ERA (7 ER, 59.0 IP) with 81 strikeouts over his last 9 starts against the Angels (since July 13, 2013).

o    Has struck out 10+ Angels hitters in 5 of his last 8 starts against the Halos (since 8/23/13).

  • Dustin Ackley hit his second career Opening Day home run (3/28/12 vs. OAK in Japan)…he becomes the third starting left fielder in Mariners history to homer on Opening Day (Darren Bragg in 1996, Eric Anthony in 1994).
  • Seth Smith was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and triple in his first 3 plate appearances in a Mariners uniform.

o    Is the first Mariners player with 3 extra-base hits in an Opening Day game and just the 13th player in club history to record at least a pair of extra-base hits on Opening Day.

o    The last Mariner to record extra-base hits in his first 2 plate appearances with the team was Richie Sexson in 2005 (2 HR)…the last MLB player with 3 XBH on Opening Day was Gerardo Parra of the Diamondbacks on 4/1/13 (3 doubles).

  • Seattle has opened the season with a win in 24 of its 39 seasons for a .615 winning percentage…since the club debuted in 1977, the .615 winning percentage on Opening Day is 4th best in the Majors behind the Mets (28-10/.737), the White Sox (24-14/.632), and the Orioles (24-14/.632).

ANGELS NOTES:

  • Jered Weaver made his 7th career Opening Day start and his 6th in a row for the Angels, both franchise records.

o    Only other pitcher in team history with 5+ Opening Day starts is Mike Witt (1985-89).

o    Weaver is now 14-11 with a 3.45 ERA (78 ER, 203.2 IP) and 154 strikeouts against Seattle in his career.

  • Jered Weaver is 2-7 with a 4.40 ERA (28 ER, 57.1 IP) with 45 strikeouts over his last 10 starts against Seattle (since Aug. 12, 2012).

o    In his first 22 career starts against Seattle was 12-4 with a 3.08 ERA (50 ER, 146.1 IP).

  • For the second consecutive Opening Day, Mike Trout hit a home run off Felix Hernandez in his first at-bat of the season…Trout is now 19-for-52 (.365 with 3 home runs off Felix…the home run was the 99th of Trout’s career.
  • The Angels loss today makes it two straight Opening Day losses to the Mariners after the Mariners won 10-3 in Los Angeles last year…despite the loss, the Angels have won nine of their last 12 Opening Days…today was the eighth time that the Angels opened the season at Seattle.

ANGELS MANAGER MIKE SCIOSCIA:

On Felix Hernandez

“He’s obviously one of the best pitchers in the game for a reason and… after Mike [Trout]’s home run, he was tough… the strikeouts he racked up and the way he commanded the count, he pitched a terrific game this afternoon.”

On the Mariners offseason

“They’re going to be good.  The whole division’s tough and the league’s tough.  We have to concentrate on our own kitchen and make sure it’s in order.”
