One of three teams nominated for ‘Team of the Year’

Although the 2014-15 season ended just a few weeks ago, the most successful season in Canada West by the the UBC Okanagan Heat women’s volleyball team, or any team at UBC Okanagan; a season in which the Heat women captured first place in the regular season along with 19 wins, before finishing the postseason in fourth place, the City of Kelowna has nominated the team from the year prior as the 2014 Team of the Year.

The 2013-14 women’s volleyball squad from UBC Okanagan finished the regular season with in seventh place with a 12-10 record and qualified for the playoffs for the second straight year. In the playoffs the Heat upset the No. 2 Brandon Bobcats two-straight in a best of three, in Manitoba. They qualified for the Canada West Final Four for the very first time in school history, in any program, only to fall one win shy of a trip to the National Championship.

This 13/14 team is the team that is up for the Bryan Couling Memorial Award, sponsored by Grant Thornton at the upcoming Civic and Community Awards on Thursday, April 30, 2015. The annual honour is awarded to the Kelowna based team (amateur or professional) who brought the greatest amount of recognition to Kelowna in 2014.

The other two finalists, announced on March 16, 2015, are: Immaculata senior girls volleyball team and the Okanagan Rockets Major Midget boys hockey team.

This is the seventh straight year a UBC Okanagan Heat team has been a finalists for the Couling award with UBC Okanagan winning three of six to date.
