Lansing Lugnuts 9, Fort Wayne TinCaps 1
The Blue Jays have been moving towards a youth movement with the Lansing Lugnuts, sending the barely 20-year-old righty Conner Greene to the Lansing Lugnuts. While he struggled to locate in the strike zone and was hit fairly hard when he left the ball up, Greene was able to get the outs when he needed them, giving up just one run over five innings on five hits and one walk while striking out five. Alonzo Gonzalez came in and absolutely dominated the TinCaps, striking out seven batters in just three innings, mixing his fastball with a changeup and slider, fanning the side twice. Staked to a big lead, Francisco Gracesqui walked the first two batters he faced before manager Ken Huckaby came out to the mound to settle him down. The next batter almost hit into a game-ending triple play when he lined a ball back to first baseman Rowdy Tellez. Tellez stepped on first to get the second out but his throw to second base was just late. The next batter bounced out to end the game.
The Lugnuts hitters seemed to be stalled until the seventh inning with only a solo home run (hit from the left side) by shortstop Richard Urena to put up on the board. In the seventh, the Lugnuts scored three and added another five in the ninth inning thanks to a bases clearing, three-RBI double hit to the right-center field wall by Ryan McBroom. Justin Atkinson had hit a two-run double earlier in the inning, squeaking it just inside the right field line. Rowdy Tellez added two singles, both hard line drives up the middle.
Player of the Game: McBroom and Gonzalez.
