Domestic Umpire Appointments Announced on National Officials Day

As National Volunteer Week continues, Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) would like to acknowledge a particular type of volunteer: the umpire.

Today, April 15th, is officially designated as National Officials Day in Canada.

According to Sports Officials Canada, the aim of this day is to increase the awareness of the importance of officiating to sport and to promote respect of the over 250,000 Canadian technical officials who help to keep sport running in this country.

Sports Officials Canada also reports that there are over 900,000 Canadians who perform some sort of sport officiating duty each year.

For the majority, it is a volunteer activity.  This is the case for many of the umpires who officiate in local regattas across this country.

A prerequisite to officiate in Canada is that all umpires are required to hold a valid Level 2 Rowing Canada Aviron umpire license to be considered for national juries.

In a membership survey conducted by RCA a year ago, 55% of active umpires were officiating a minimum of six regattas a season, with some umpires working as many as twenty.

Umpires are passionate about the role that they play in the sports system.  Their dedication and volunteerism makes them an essential service specifically to the rowing landscape, and more widely to the sporting system as a whole.

Here is a list of umpire appointments for the 2015 domestic season in Canada:
