VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s and women’s golf teams will head off for their AII Conference Championship this weekend, with competition dates set for Apr. 27-28 in Victoria, Texas. The Vikes men will play 54 holes over two days at Victoria Country Club, while the women will play 18 holes each day at The Club at Colony Creek.

“Our strongest competition for both teams will be UBC and San Marcos,” said Vikes head coach Justin Clews. “Both of our teams are currently ranked in the NAIA Top-20 but beating UBC and/or San Marcos for either team would really improve our ranking even further. I’m confident despite how we play, that both (Vikes) teams will makes NAIA Nationals but our goal is to finish top-3. I’m excited for us to showcase our talent and carry the momentum both teams have produces this spring.”

To reach their goal the Vikes will need the continual strong performances from third year Alex Cartwright and rookies Lawren Rowe and Mike Griffin on the men’s side, while rookie Brianna Carrels and senior Michaela Abey will lead the women’s side.

“I expect Lawren, Mike and Alex to be in the top 15 and Brianna and Michaela should be aiming for top 10,” added Clews. “This is team play though and the key to both our team’s successes will be producing a strong fourth and fifth score. We need to eliminate counting a 75 or higher for the men for a fourth score and over 82 as a women’s fourth score.”

The Vikes competed at both of these venues two years ago for the same championship but just Cartwright, Abey and Cari Chow competed that year.

“Both courses are traditional style parkland golf courses with treelined fairways and some water,” described Clews. “Forecast looks to be hot and humid with a possible chance of thunderstorms and Wednesday is also a potential weather day if we get delays on Monday and Tuesday.”

Qualifiers will move on to the NAIA national championships. The 64th Annual men’s championship will be hosted at LPGA International, Daytona Beach, Florida. From May 19-22. The 21st Annual women’s championship will be hosted at Savannah Quarters Country Club in Pooler, Georgia.
