Velox Rugby News Coming Up

The 2nd div women travel to Nanaimo to play the Lomas, and the premier women have the weekend off. They will be back in action on May 2nd, hosting a BC semi-final (against Capilano, with current rankings).

The firsts are competing for the Cowichan Cup, top prize on the Island for 1st div squads from clubs without a premier team. Velox finished first in the league with a record of 9-1-1 (compared to Port at 5-4-1), but the only blemishes on that record – a loss and a tie – both came at the hands of the Black Sheep. This should make for an entertaining match! The winner proceeds to the BC semi-finals next weekend, with a chance to host Seattle. These next two Saturdays, the 25th and May 2nd, are probably your last opportunities to catch home games at our Gordon Head location. I hope to see you there!

A well-attended AGM Thursday night gave the sitting executive an opportunity to report on the past year – a busy one on and off the field. Our tenure at 3928 Gordon Head Road comes to a close June 1st, made official today with the signing of legal documents with the University of Victoria. Come September, we will kick off at our new home by the Juan de Fuca Rec Center in Colwood. A new all-weather artificial pitch has just been completed, and targeted for our use on practice nights.

Most members of the executive have stayed on for another year, but there have been a few changes. Notably, we were unable to elect a secretary (one will be found by the exec). Also, the positions of Director of Fields and Director of Clubhouse won’t be needed in our new digs, and are being replaced by Director of Facilities (who is tasked with coordinating efforts between Velox and Colwood).

President: Mark Wyatt (replacing Mike Holmes)
Vice-President: Mike Holmes (replacing Mark Wyatt)
Director of Rugby: John MacMillan
Sgt at Arms: Jay Jimmo
Secretary: vacant (outgoing is Tanysia Komers)
Treasurer: Christel Hume
Director of Jr Rugby: Marlene Donaldson
Director of Facilities: Matt Evans (Matt had been Director of Fields, and Barry Wheelhouse Director of Clubhouse)

From the rest of the club membership, thank you to all of these individuals who have stepped up to volunteer their time and lead the club! In addition to secretary, the executive will also be looking to fill a number of positions over the summer: electronic information manager, social coordinator, advertising/sponsorship chairperson, male and female team reps, and youth rugby coordinator.
