The long winter silence was broken Saturday night as Western Speedway opened its race season for 2015 with the Lordco Auto Parts Demo Series featuring the Demo Cars, Demo Trucks, Figure 8s, and the Bomber Series.
The first thing you would note is the improvements to the facility as the Wille Family has made some major improvements to the grandstands with new seats and paint and the concession area under the grandstand with more lighting and concession stands. This is very good for Western Speedway as this shows the owners are investing back into the property and that the Speedway will be around some time to come.

The first driver of 2015 was Aaron Cameron as he took the Trophy Dash for the Bombers followed by Joe Liberatore in the Demo Cars, Kenny Baker in the Demo Trucks, and Rhett Szevics in the Figure 8s. Other Heat race winners included Joe Liberatore in the Demo Cars, Kenny Baker in the Demo Trucks, and Kail Beck and Brody Devlin in the Figure 8 Series. The combined Heat race in the Demo Car and Demo Trucks was stopped on the first lap as Eddy Cooper suffered a hard hit and slammed into the turn 3 wall. Emergency crews hurried to aid Eddy and make sure he was OK. He suffered some soreness but otherwise fine. The race was restarted and on the very last lap Jim Young took out the leader George Haywood and that slowed him down enough to allow Smokin Joe Liberatore to pass and take the chequered flag by just inches over Young for his second win of the night.

Wayne Hart and Stephen Green led twelve cars to the green flag in the Mini Figure 8 Feature event. It only took last season’s Champion Rhett Szevics one lap to gain the lead followed by Kevin Knight and a wicked battle for third with Ryan Lewis and Green. On lap fifteen Lewis moved into the second spot followed by Tanner Jacobs. This race featured some hard hitting and one of the hardest was at the crossover as Lewis tagged Kail Beck broadside but both were able to continue. When the dust settled, Lewis came away with the win followed by Jacobs and Szevics.
Stuart Campbell and Sean Whitley shared the front row for the start of the Bomber Feature event scheduled for forty laps. Whitley got away for the early lead followed Rich Gerhardt and Mike Dionne. On lap ten the yellow came out as one of the drivers spun out on the backstretch. On the double file restart Gerhardt and Dionne formed the front row as Whitley entered the pits on the yellow flag. Dionne got the lead from there and on lap sixteen Bobby Cyr moved into the second position. On lap twenty Gilles Cyr moved into the third spot. Dionne held off a strong charge from the rest of the field and took the chequered flag followed by Bobby and Gilles Cyr with Gerhardt holding on to fourth.

In a combined Demo Car Demo Truck Feature Joe Liberatore led start to finish to complete a clean sweep for the Demo Car Series while Kenny Baker followed suit also scoring a clean sweep in the Demo Trucks both drivers winning the Trophy Dash and Heat race for their respective class. All the drivers received trophies from Emily and Jen at Victory Square. Capital Drift put on two demonstrations during the evening’s program and the fans where also treated to a fly over by the Canadian Snowbirds who happened to be quite close to the Speedway. Next racing at Western is scheduled for May 2nd and will feature opening night for the Non Winged Sprint Cars, the Island Stock Cars, the Island Dwarf Cars, SDL Bins Mini Stocks, and OTRA.
