The 2015 National Rowing Championships have been awarded to St. Catharines Rowing Club (SCRC). Canada’s top rowers will be hosted on the very same course as the Pan American Games Regatta that is taking place this July.

The 2015 National Rowing Championships will take place from October 8-10 on the Royal Canadian Henley course, capping off an extremely busy summer for rowing in St. Catharine’s.

The St. Catharines Rowing Club is known for its excellence in hosting regattas during both the high school and club competitive season. Along with these regattas, The Royal Canadian Henley course, home to SCRC, will host the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Championships in June, the Pan American Games Regatta in July and the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in August, with many of SCRC’s rowers, coaches and volunteers involved in those events.

“Congratulations to the St. Catharines Rowing Club and many volunteers who have worked together to bring the National Rowing Championships to St. Catharines,” said Mayor Walter Sendzik. “This is another opportunity to put our city on the map of world-class sporting facilities and celebrate our long and proud history of rowing. We look forward to welcoming the athletes and the spectators from across Canada to our hometown later this year.”

The 2015 National Rowing Championships will see exciting racing from Canada’s top rowers as they look to be crowned National Champions and make their mark ahead of Olympic and Paralympic selections for the Rio 2016 Games.

“The National Rowing Championships before an Olympic/Paralympic year are a crucial marker for athletes wishing to be considered for selection,” said Peter Cookson, Director of High Performance. “I know that the organising committee will put on a great regatta and we’ll see some exciting racing over this iconic 2000m course.”

“Our club is very excited to be hosting these championships,” said Michelle Kerr, President of SCRC. “We are pleased to be working closely with our partners at the Canadian Henley Rowing Corporation and with our valued regatta volunteer groups to ensure we put on a world class regatta for the athletes competing for the national titles.”

St. Catharines Rowing Club, one of Canada’s oldest and largest clubs, has a long history of producing Canadian National Team Rowers and current club member and London 2012 Silver Medallist, Natalie Mastracci will be looking to perform well at home.

“The St. Catharines Rowing Club will put on a great Championships,” said Mastracci, speaking from the National Training Centre in London, ON. “And I’m excited to be able to return to the club that has shown me so much support, and race for the crown of National Champion. I hope I can make them proud.”

Joining Natalie and the other members of the National Senior and Para teams will be many new faces from the junior and under-23 ranks, looking to compete for the national titles this fall.
