Current BCHL Player of the Week Patrick Newell scored twice in the second period, including the game-winner on the man advantage, and Hunter Miska made 20 saves as the Penticton Vees downed the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s (NOJHL) Soo Thunderbirds 5-2 at the RBC Cup Thursday afternoon.

OFFICIAL BOXSCORE

The Vees finish the round-robin portion of the tournament with a 3-1 record. At 0-4, Soo is now eliminated.

Thursday night’s game features the host Portage Terriers (2-1) and the Melfort Mustangs (1-1-1). A win for the Terriers would give them first place as they defeated the Vees 3-2 in the tournament opener.

Penticton will play in one of the semifinal games scheduled for Saturday. Puck drop will be either 12 p.m. or 5 p.m. Pacific.
