BC Rugby is pleased to announce the launch of the BC Rugby Elite Girls 7’s program.
This new BC representative high‐performance program will complement the existing boys program, known as the BC Elite Youth 7s, which has achieved tremendous success since its inception in 2010. During that time, the boy’s team has won numerous prestigious international youth 7’s rugby tournaments, and produced several national players for Rugby Canada.
The success of the boys program has proven that this new BC Rugby Elite Girls 7’s program will be a vital pathway and proving ground for athletes with future National team aspirations on the World Rugby 7’s circuit and at the Olympics. Canada’s women are currently ranked 3rd in the world and today captured an automatic berth into the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The expectations for the BC Rugby Elite Girls 7’s will be high, right from the outset, but there is an extensive pool of girls rugby players who will benefit incredibly from the implementation of this new program.
BC Rugby’s CEO, Jim Dixon stated, “We are incredibly pleased to announce the implementation of a female focused 7’s program. The success of the BC Elite Youth 7’s program has acted as a catalyst for this program and I’m sincerely grateful to The Onni Group for supporting BC Rugby with this important performance pathway opportunity. It is an excellent development opportunity for young women in our province and we are looking forward to seeing more BC women on our national team.”
BC Rugby would also like to introduce Onni Group as the principal sponsor of the BC Rugby Elite Girls 7’s. Their long-term support will provide a platform from which the team can build, participate in high‐performance tournaments and secure world class coaching and mentorship for the players.
“Onni is honoured to be a continuing supporter of BC Rugby and, in particular, to have the opportunity to launch and back the BC Rugby Elite Girls 7’s program. Onni holds strong the belief that such elite programs should be inclusive of all youth in the Province and that they will foster excellence within the game at home. We have great confidence that with the underpinning of the elite program the girls’ team will heighten the success they have already achieved. We wish them all the best and look forward to seeing them win on the field”.
The team will represent BC in national and international competitions. The BC Elite Girls 7’s team is expected to make their competitive debut at the Victoria International Youth 7’s,being held July 10‐11 at the University of Victoria.
