Canada’s Men’s Team Beats Mexico and Qualifies for World Cup!
May 22, 2015 – Canada made quick work of Mexico today at the NORCECA Champions Cup at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan. The Canadians won 3-0 ( 25-12, 25-20, 25-13), which also means they finish in the top two at this tournament.
Canada and the U.S. – the top Champions Cup finishers – earn a berth in the 2015 FIVB World Cup, which is the first qualifier for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Saskatoon’s Gavin Schmitt contributed 12 points to today’s effort, followed by Toon Van Lankvelt of Rivers, Manitoba, with eight.
“This is important for us – first, we haven’t qualified for the World Cup since 2003 and second, this is the first step to Rio,” said Canada’s head coach Glenn Hoag. “Competing at the World Cup (in Japan, September 8 to 23) will allow us to be exposed to playing the top teams.”
The U.S. beat Cuba this Friday evening 3-1. Canada (ranked 14th in the world) now faces the Americans (5th) tomorrow at 6 p.m. at Joe Louis Arena.
“Tomorrow, against the U.S., will be a chance to play another strong opponent,” said Canada’s team captain Fred Winters of Victoria, B.C. “We play Bulgaria next week in World League, and the U.S. will be a nice tune up for us.”
