DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The University of Victoria Vikes men’s golf team have had their NAIA National Championship appearance cut short after the team failed to make the 17-team cut following the third round. The Vikes finished tied for 20th with a three-round score of 49-over, 913. The team shot 299 in their second and third rounds but their opening 315 score set them on a steep climb from the get-go.

Despite entering the competition as one of the best freshmen squads, the Vikes had to dig themselves out of a tough first round. First-year Vike Lawren Rowe, also this year’s Male Rookie of the Year at UVic, finished at the top of the board for Victoria. Rowe improved from his round one score of 81 to card 74 and 73 over the last two days. The Victoria native finished 12-over par, 228 and tied for 98th. Fellow Vikes rookie Mike Griffin was fairly consistent throughout the week shooting 75 on Day 1 and 78 in his next two rounds to finish 15-over par, 231. Team mates Andrew Funk and Matthew Broughton also finished 15-over after carding their lowest rounds on Day 3. Alex Cartwrightfinished 18-over, 234 to tied for 119th.

The Vikes finished in a three-way tie for 20th with Bellevue University and Davenport.

Defending champion Coastal Georgia began to pull away from the field Thursday at the NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship.

The top-ranked Mariners finished off a 1-over-par 289 in the second round, which was suspended due to lightning Wednesday evening, and carded a third round of 5-under-par 283 in the afternoon to open up a 16-shot advantage over second-place William Woods (Mo.). Cal State San Marcos is another shot back at 7-over-par, followed by Johnson & Wales (Fla.) at 8-over.

There isn’t much more drama atop the individual leaderboard, as Dalton State’s Sean Elliott shot 7-under-par 65 to get to 14-under for the tournament and build a six-shot lead over Coastal Georgia’s Alastair Tidcombe.

Texas Wesleyan’s Nikolaj Brons-Piche is third at 7-under. Elliott made six birdies on his second nine, including four in-a-row, to card his third-straight round of 69-or-better and begin to pull away from the field.

The field was cut to 17 teams plus six individuals for the final round, which begins at 7:30 a.m. Friday.

Up next the Vikes men will have a quick turn around, competing in the Golf Canada Canadian University/College National Championship hosted in Guelph, Ont. from May 25-29.
