LISBON, PORTUGAL – Canada’s quest for their first U20 World Rugby Trophy ended in disappointment Sunday as they lost to Georgia 49-24 at the Estadio Universitario in Lisbon, Portugal.

Georgia’s pack proved to be the difference as they overpowered Canada’s front eight en route to scoring seven tries. Luke Bradley scored twice for Canada while Lucas Rumball also added a try. Dylan Horgan converted all three tries and also added a second half penalty.

Canada began the game on the back foot but managed to weather Georgia’s attacking prowess for the first 15 minutes but finally gave up the opening try of the game when Mikheil Babunashvili drove over the line from a lineout. Giorgi Melikidze made it 12-0 when he scored off a driving maul from another lineout after 27 minutes.

Georgia would tack on two more tries through Giorgi Kveseladze and Tornike Zoidze to build a 24-0 lead before Canada got on the scoreboard as Rumball collected a loose ball from the kickoff and crashed over in the 37th minute. Horgan would add the conversion to give Canada some momentum heading into the second half.

Revaz Jinchvelashvili and Horgan would trade penalties to open the second half before Georgia scored two tries in the space of three minutes to push their lead to 39-10.

Canada responded as Bradley crashed over the line for his first try of the game but Jinchvelashvili would get in on the try-scoring by chipping over the Canadian defence and touching down to make it 46-17.

Bradley would add his second try in the 64th minute before Jinchvelashvili completed the scoring with his fourth penalty.

By finishing second, Canada matches its best ever finish in the tournament. They also finished second in 2013.
