OTTAWA (CIS) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport, in conjunction with the Canadian Fencing Federation, announced Wednesday the seven student-athletes who will represent Canada in fencing at the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea.

Three team members have previous experience at the biennial FISU Games, including Cédric Boutet of Rosemère, Que., and Julien Hogues of Montreal, both from Concordia University, as well as Vincent Lavoie of Quebec City, who studies at the University of Montreal. The first two are sabre specialists and were part of the Canadian squad in Kazan, Russia in 2013, while Lavoie, who will compete in the epee tournament, represented the Maple Leaf in Belgrade, Serbia, in 2009.

Joining them in Gwangju will be male teammates Daniel Carleton of Vancouver, Clément Féménias-Métivet of Quebec City and Hans Wolfgramm of Toronto, as well as Louise Fournier of Montreal, the lone female competitor on the team.

Féménias-Métivet and Fournier will compete in the epee events, while Carleton and Wolfgramm are entered in the sabre and foil tournaments, respectively.

Rounding out the delegation is head coach and team manager Patricia Howes from Royal Military College, who was also Team Canada’s coach two years ago in Kazan.

A number of team members have international experience beyond the Universiade. For one, Boutet won two bronze medals at the Junior Pan American Games in 2013 and took part in the World Cup the following year.

Canadian fencers have captured two Universiade medals over the years, including silver in the men’s team epee competition in 1987 in Zagreb and a third-place finish by Madeleine Philion in foil in 1983 in Edmonton.

The Gwangju tourney is set for July 4 to 9.
