Victoria, BC – 47 athletes between the ages of 13-35 tested their capacity for sport performance yesterday as part of Canadian Sport Institute Pacific’s fourth annual PODIUM SEARCH. As a result of an improved recruitment process, 15 athletes with a disability were tested with specialized equipment against Paralympic standards.
“It was fantastic to see so many athletes with a disability engaged this year. I would like to thank the Canadian Paralympic Committee for their outstanding support. Over the past four years we have tested over 300 athletes and to date we have identified three athletes who have what it takes” said Kurt Innes, Director of Talent Development with the Canadian Sport Institute Pacific, Olympic track cyclist (1992), and Olympic cycling coach (2000, 2004).
Athletes who participated in PODIUM SEARCH are currently being evaluated for possible follow-up assessments by various National and/or Provincial Sport Organizations, and for selection to Canadian Sport Institute Pacific’s NextGen Programs based on their test scores during the camp. They may also be invited to join the Canadian Sport School. In 2014, three athletes identified at PODIUM SEARCH transitioned full-time into Canadian Sport Institute NextGen Programs, two in cycling, and one in para-rowing.
In addition to the testing events, athletes heard an inspirational address from keynote speaker Gillian Carleton, 2012 Olympic bronze medallist in track cycling. Carleton spoke on the importance of trying something new, explaining how she transitioned from triathlon to cycling.
The next PODIUM SEARCH takes place this September 19 in Whistler. Please visitcsipacific.ca for more details.
PODIUM SEARCH is a free, half-day athlete identification camp offering athletes basic physiological field testing and anthropometric results to measure how they stack up against national team standards. Assessments include the vertical jump test, 30 metre sprint run among other field tests in use by National Team programs. Each participant walked away with a copy of their test results and an understanding of what it takes to become part of Canada’s sporting elite.
