OTTAWA (CIS) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Wednesday the student-athletes and support staff who will represent Canada in shooting at the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea (July 3-14).
The all-women squad heading to the 27th summer world university games is comprised of five athletes from four provinces, including 2013 Universiade veteran Kelsey Bjorkman of Creston, B.C., Erin Beckett of Langley, B.C., Christie MacLennan of Oakville, Ont.,Samantha Marsh of Mount Pearl, Nfld., and Caroline Sims of Minnedosa, Man.
The group will be accompanied in South Korea by head coach Lisa Borgerson of Rockglen, Sask., and team leader Michelle Stewart of New Westminster, B.C. It will mark the third tour of duty at the FISU Games for Borgerson, who acted as team leader two years ago in Kazan, Russia, and was an assistant coach in 2011 in Shenzhen, China.
In Gwangju, Bjorkman will compete in the 10-metre air pistol along with Beckett and Sims, and will also line up with MacLennan in the 25m sport pistol tournament. For her part, Marsh is entered in the 10m air rifle and the 50m rifle three positions.
“An event of this magnitude has many obstacles and challenges,” said Borgerson. “It is as much about preparing athletes for future success as it is achieving success.”
This will mark Canada’s third straight participation in shooting at the Universiade and fourth overall. The best Canuck result to date at the biennial competition is a 17th-place finish in the women’s 10m air pistol by Lea Wacowhich of Redwater, Alta., in 2007 in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Gwangju shooting competition is set to run from July 5 to 10.
