Both the USA Rugby Men and Women’s Eagles Sevens are coming off of successful seasons and will look to continue that success in Cary, NC.
The Women’s Eagles narrowly missed Olympic qualification on the Women’s Sevens Series after a 15-14 loss to England in the third-place match at the Netherland Women’s Sevens. The Women’s Eagles ended the series tied with England with 76 points, ultimately finishing in fifth place following the loss in Amsterdam.
The Men’s Eagles Sevens will be riding high into Cary, NC as they are fresh off of their first-ever World Rugby HSBC Sevens World Series title. The Men’s Eagles scored seven tries in a dominant, 45-22, defeat of Australia in the Marriott London Sevens Cup Final last month. Ultimately, the men would fall just short of qualification with a sixth place finish in the standings. The USA Rugby Men’s Eagles finished 13th last year.
The top-4 teams in the standings of both the Men and Women’s series receive automatic qualification to the Olympic games.
Men’s rugby will make its return to the Summer Olympic Games for the first time since 1924 – when Team USA took home the Gold Medal. The 2016 games will mark the first time women’s rugby has been played in the Olympics.
