Volleyball Canada – Jackie Skender

Canada beat Argentina today in Halifax 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-19) in the teams’ FIVB Men’s Volleyball World League showdown at the Scotiabank Place in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in front of 2,100 enthusiastic east-coast fans.

“We expected them to come out strong; they are a very fast team,” said Canada’s coach Glenn Hoag. “We were somewhat prepared for that, but we made a lot of execution errors, so that made it difficult for us. We’re going to have to be ready for them tomorrow.”
Argentina opened the first set with 4-0 advantage until Canada organized its offense and clawed its way back.
“I think we did a good job weathering their storm when they came out early,” said Gavin Schmitt, who led Canada in scoring with 22 points, including an ace to finish the game. “We had to grind back and get back into the game. It took us a while to catch up to their speed and style of play, but I think we can do a lot better job. I think they’ll come back even better tomorrow, so we’re going to have to be very focused.”
Rudy Verhoeff, Gord Perrin and Steve Marshall each contributed seven points to the Canadian team’s victory. The top scorer for Argentina was Nicolas Bruno with 12.
“I think it went well in the first set. In the third set, we didn’t play as well as the first two,” said Argentina’s captain, Demian Gonzalez. “I think a 3-0 score seems unrealistic for how close the sets were. Canada is a good team and they defended better than we did. We’re going to watch video, and see what we can improve for tomorrow.”
Canada remains atop the Pool C standings with this win. The teams meet again in Halifax at 6:30 pm local time on Saturday.
