A Five-Set Thriller Goes Bulgaria’s Way

Summerside, PEI, June 12, 2015: Canada came out fighting, but couldn’t hold on for the win against Bulgaria tonight in five sets (25-20, 19-25, 25-22, 25-27,12-15) in the teams’ third meeting in FIVB World League’s intercontinental round.  “It was similar to our previous matches where we fight hard, but the quality is not right there, and against experienced teams like Bulgaria it makes the difference,” explained Canada’s head coach Glenn Hoag. “We didn’t make the plays in the fourth set to finish it, but we are going to keep working and getting better.”

Danail Milushev’s 17 points boosted Bulgaria’s effort and he was top scorer overall. Gavin Schmitt contributed 15 for Canada, followed by Gord Perrin with 13 and Justin Duff adding 12.

“It was a tough game, I think it was very equal. The Canadian team started off better, but after we made a comeback. It was important for us, I wanted to win at least one game here in Canada, so we are very happy about the victory,” said Bulgaria’s coach Plamen Konstantinov. “I’m happy for all the guys, they came in after the second and third set and they helped to turn the match and to win.”

Bulgaria has less on the line, as the host of the next round of World League, they already advance, while Canada has to top its pool.  In Bulgaria in late May, Canada split its two matches – they play again tomorrow night in Summerside at 8 pm Atlantic.Andrey Zhekov, captain of team Bulgaria, said: “We are looking towards the next games and especially the finals.”The match was played before more than 1850 enthusiastic fans at Credit Union Place.Video highlights on YouTube: https://youtu.be/wwgqRO651cc
