Canada Wins Second-Night Battle with Bulgaria

Volleyball Canada – Jackie Skender

Summerside, PEI, June 13, 2015: Canada came back after yesterday’s five-set loss to triumph over Bulgaria 3-1 (25-18, 25-19, 21-25, 25-20) in FIVB World League intercontinental round pool C play today in Prince Edward Island.

Gordon Perrin led scoring for Canada with 17 points. Perrin had a scoring contest with Bulgaria’s Miroslav Gradinarov, who finished with a match high of 18 points. Steven Marshall and Max Burt scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Canadian side.”It was a nice win,” said Canada’s head coach Glenn Hoag. “We were a little better from the serving line today, taking a little more risk, but at the same time causing more damage with their receiving and enabling us to stop their offense.”Canada looked confident in the first and second sets,  and then Bulgaria suddenly changed the tempo of their game and took an 8-2 lead in the third set. With some help from the crowd, Canada was able to cut the lead to within four 14-10 until Bulgaria managed to keep the advantage and secure the third.Canada regained its focus and controlled the fifth set 25-20 to end the Bulgarians’ three-match winning streak ended.Bulgaria’s coach, Plamen Konstantinov, was not impressed:  “It was a different match from the one yesterday. We tried some different players today, both us and the Canadian team. I can say that I’m not satisfied with the play today. I wanted to see something different on the court, like more passion.”Canada’s frequent top contributor, Gavin Schmitt, did not play tonight.”I thought we played really well,” said team captain Fred Winters. “When we play Steve Marshall it gives our team a different dimension. … Every time we’ve asked him to play he’s done really well, on left side or as opposite. Our team is really comfortable playing with him and that’s good because Gavin can’t play in every match.  And a couple guys that haven’t had the chance to play, like Max (Burt), went in and did well.” More than 1500 proud fans witnessed the win Credit Union Place in Summerside.Video highlights on YouTube:
