Voting for the All-Stars has been active for a few weeks now, with a great response so far. We are now set up for online participation, so those of you who were unable to come to the club during our final events can finally join in!
Here is how it works: you send payment to me via Paypal ($20 using a Paypal account, or credit card), and I will email you a pdf with profiles for all of the nominees. After reading through, you email back your votes. In the fall, you will be able to pick up your official printed copy that includes all of the results (or, for $5 more we can mail it to you wherever you are in the world).
What it is all about:
Have you ever thought about who the greatest players through our history are, and what kind of dream team we could create? This is your chance to contribute your votes! A committee of club stalwarts has come up with a list of 60 players (four per position) spanning our history back to 1969, all of whom are fantastic players, great club guys, and have played at least four season at the club. You also get to vote for a coach from four nominees to lead this theoretical squad.
For $20 you get a package of player profiles for all 63 candidates. There are 60 players and 4 coaches: can you guess which nominee is in there as both player and coach? The fee gets you a ballot and, after all the votes are in and revealed at our new home in the Westshore, a booklet tabulating all the results. You’ll need to purchase a ballot to find out all of the nominations, but there are certainly some tough decisions to make. For example, the competition for #10 will be interesting! Do you go with Mark Wyatt, who at one point was the top point scorer of all time for Canada (now merely 4th)? Or Winston Stanley, who still holds the title of most tries for the national squad? Perhaps you’d rather go with another Velox legend, like Damon Jones or George Jones?
The club is hosting youth camps throughout the summer, in cooperation with West Shore Parks and Rec, for boys and girls ages 6-10, and 11+. These non-contact camps run in 5 day blocks (July 6-10, 13-17, 20-24, and Aug 10-14, 17-21), and include a variety of other activities such as swimming. They run from 9am-4pm at the Juan de Fuca Velodrome turf field (our new practice pitch behind the rec center in Colwood!), and come with the option of pre- and post-camp coverage for working parents. You can register throughwww.westshorerecreation.com, and get more details on pages 43 and 48 of the West Shore Parks and Recreation Summer Activity Guide, available online.
