Volleyball Canada – Jackie Skender

Havana, Cuba, :  Cuba found its focus and drive on Saturday night to score a comeback 3-2 (17-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-19, 15-12) victory over Canada in Pool C of the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World League at the Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum in Havana.Cuba’s Captain Rolando Cepeda unleashed his power with 25 points, including 19 kills, three blocks and three aces to lead the Cuban team to the win.

Steven Marshall contributed 17 points for Canada, with Adam Simac adding 14.“We started well,” said Canada’s coach Glenn Hoag, “but Cuba started to really play in the third set. We went down, and they started blocking us and serving better.”Cepeda made the difference for the Cuban side, allowing the team to force its way into a tie-breaker set. The Cubans then put on a convincing 15-12 finish, giving the home fans something to cheer about as they finished their series with Canada in week six of the intercontinental round with a 1-1 record.“We wanted to win six points and we only got four (with the win Friday and the five-set loss on Saturday),” said Canada’s team captain, Fred Winters. “I think if we look back at the game, we’re disappointed in what we’ve done. The way we played tonight is not enough to win next week (in Argentina). We need to forget about tonight and get focused on Argentina to advance to Final 4 in Bulgaria.”Canada still leads its pool with 22 points.Cuba’s captain Rolando Cepeda said: “Our attitude in this match made the difference tonight. We really had courage to overcome difficulty and get victory. We are going to Bulgaria with a winning mentality, and our minds are set on the Pan American Games in Toronto.”
