Buenos Aires, Argentina, : Canada’s men’s team is heading into the final weekend of its intercontinental round of FIVB World League Pool C play in the lead, and is ready to take on Argentina.

“Obviously, this is our last weekend and so we want to finish with a good result.  If we could win a match, it would almost assure us a ticket for Bulgaria for the final four. In order to do that, we need to play well and that’s what we will focus on in this match,” said Canada’s head coach Glenn Hoag. “A lot of our players now are resting, so we don’t have our full squad and Argentina has its full squad, so we’ll see. The guys we have here are ready to play, and I think they can do the job.”

Hoag has added a few new faces to the roster this weekend, including his son Chris Hoag, while resting some team veterans such as Toon Van Lankvelt and Gavin Schmitt. “It has been a long seven weeks, including the World Cup qualifier, so for the guys it’s not easy.  It’s been a lot of travel, and we have the Pan Am Games coming up pretty quickly, so we need to manage the group,” explained Hoag.

In Halifax earlier this month, Canada beat Argentina 3-0, then lost in five sets on the second day of that weekend’s play. Canada has 22 points in Pool C; while Argentina sits at 13, Bulgaria at 12 and Cuba with seven. Canada has played two more matches than Argentina’s side.

The next phase of World League for this group, the final four, takes place in Bulgaria.

Today’s match will be live on Sportsnet WL today at 5:30 eastern; and replayed Sportsnet ONE 10:30 am Saturday morning (EDT).
