The Pacific Coast Soccer League’s Premier Men’s Division race for first place is a tight three way competition as the summer league winds into the final quarter of the season. Highlanders FC find themselves sharing second place on 23 points with Mid Isle Mariners, their Island rivals to the north in Ladysmith. Vancouver United FC are clear in first postion with 26 points.
With four games remaining on the schedule, Highlanders are in control of securing a top playoff seed with half of their remaining games versus the Mariners. The Island Derby comes full-on this Sunday, June 28th up the road in Ladysmith at Forrest Field, a 2pm kick off.
Mid Isle currently holds a game in hand on the Highlanders, which will be made upthis Saturday in Vancouver versus fourth place Vancouver Thunderbirds.
“As the season winds down, we continue our push for a playoff spot”, commented Marv Diercks, General Manager. “The schedule afforded us a timely break last weekend, and we hope our fresh legs can take advantage of the Mariners who will be playing on consecutive days this weekend. Hopefully we will see some of our supporters make the trip to Ladysmith to encourage our team through”.
After Sunday’s game. the Highlanders will play two more games away from Victoria, a ‘royalty’ weekend; Saturday., July 4th vs. Tim Hortons Pinnacles (King Park, Penticton) and Sunday, July 5th vs. Khalsa Sporting Club (Queen’s Park East, New Westminister).
The home version of the Island Derby with Mid Isle Mariners will see the Highlanders in their final home game, Sunday, July 19th at Royal Athletic Park,2pm.
