VICTORIA – A total of seven University of Victoria Vikes track athletes will represent their respective provinces at the 2015 Canadian Track and Field Championships hosted in Edmonton, Alta. from July 2-5.
At this summer’s senior championships, fourth-year Vike Thomas Riva, fifth year Kendra Pomfret and second year Ben Weir will be representing Team BC while the trio of Rachel Francois, Emma Bibault and Nicole Soderberg will race for Alberta. On the junior side, first year Isaac Penner will also compete for the Alberta.
Riva will race the 1500-m, an event in which he is ranked third in the country amongst the other athletes present at the event. On the women’s side, Pomfret, Soderberg and Bibault will also race the 1500-m.
“The athletes will have to be very tactical in the semis to reach the finals,” said track head coach Brent Fougner. “Their priority is to get to the finals.”
Francois will be a strong contender for the 800-m finals. Out of the other runners in the event she is ranked fourth in the country and will look to make the final after just barely missing qualification last year.
Second-year Vike Ben Weir will be racing in the 5000-m in preparation for the Western Canada Summer Games, which take place in August this summer, while Penner has eyes on reaching qualification time for the Pan-American Junior Athletics Championships happening in late July. Penner is ranked fourth in the country going into the event.
Following the national championship, Francois will race in the Edmonton International Track Classic on July 12. Both Francois and Riva will then travel to Europe to compete in several meets over the summer.
The 2015 Canadian Track and Field Championships have combined the championships for the senior, junior and para-athletics categories for the first time ever. The three-day Athletics Canada event will be held at University of Alberta’s Foot Field from July 2-5.
