GWANGJU, South Korea (Team Canada) – The Canadian swimming team had a strong start qualifying for three finals on the first day of competition at the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju.

Samantha Corea of Vancouver, B.C., had a solid day in the pool advancing to the final in the women’s 50m Butterfly on Sunday night at the Nambu University International Aquatics Center. Corea finished third overall in her heat with a time of 26.68 to advance to the semi-finals where she improved on her speed and again placed third overall with a time of 26.34.

In the women’s 200m Backstroke semi-finals, Canada was represented by Barbara Jardin of Montreal, and Genevieve Cantin of Saguenay, Que. Jardin, a University of Montreal swimmer, advanced to the Sunday night final with a time of 2:12.52, while Cantin narrowly missed out of the qualifying with a 9th place finish in a time of 2:13.33. Cantin is slotted in as the first reserve in the event that an athlete is unable to compete in the final.

In the Canadian’s final race of the day, the relay team of Hannah Riordan, Caroline Lapierre-Lemire, Rojas-Jardin, and Kylie Masse competed in the women’s 4x100m freestyle final and finished eighth overall in a time of 3:44.90.

“We finished the day with eight top sixteen placings with three of them moving on to the final, and that bodes well for the rest of the week,” said head coach Lance Cansdale.

When looking forward to the rest of the competition, Cansdale has a positive outlook. “I hope we can gain momentum and carry it forward,” the Halifax, Nova Scotia native continued. “We talk about building each day and today was a strong day. It will be tough to build from that but I believe we can do it and move forward.”

On the men’s side of the competition, UQAM’s Jeremie De Zwirek advanced to the semi-finals in the 100m backstroke but failed to qualify for the final with a time of 56.32.

Competition continues Sunday with preliminary qualifiers in the men’s 200m freestyle, the men’s 200m individual medley, the women’s 100m freestyle, and the women’s 1500m freestyle.
