Volleyball Canada – Jackie Skender

Three out of Canada’s five entries in the FIVB Beach World Championships in the Netherlands finished in the top 10.

It was hard fought, but Sarah Pavan and Heather Bansley were defeated by Brazilians Juliana Da Silva and Maria Antonelli 0-2 (23-25, 18-21) in the quarter finals yesterday. Pavan and Bansley finished fifth – a Canadian women’s best-ever result at a beach World Championship.

“This is a reflection of the hard work that our athletes, coaches and support team have been putting in over the past two years,” said Canada’s beach national team head coach, Steve Anderson. “The World Championships and the Pan Am Games are the most similar events to the Olympic Games available to Canadians, and provide tremendous opportunities to our athletes to experience the format and pressure they will face in the 2016 Rio Olympics.”

Melissa Humana-Paredes and Taylor Pischke will represent Canada at the upcoming Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games on the women’s side; and Josh Binstock and Sam Schachter form the men’s tournament team.

Heather Bansley (Waterdown, ON) and Sarah Pavan (Kitchener, ON) – 5th
Melissa Humana-Paredes (Toronto, ON) and Taylor Pischke (Winnipeg, MB) – 9th

Josh Binstock and Sam Schachter (both Richmond Hill, ON) – 9th
Ben Saxton (Calgary, AB) and Chaim Schalk (Red Deer, AB) – 17th
