This new U16-U18 female representative rugby program, proudly supported by Onni Group, will be built upon the template of the hugely successful BC Elite Youth 7s boys team, first established in 2010.
“We are excited to welcome Darcy and we know that this new program will be in good hands under her leadership,” said Dean Murten, BC Rugby Performance Development Manager. “Darcy, in her previous experience as coach at both the club and BC Rep team levels, has demonstrated the attributes needed to succeed in this position. She will be an excellent mentor for the young women in the program and play a key role in BC Rugby’s drive to deliver high-performance female athletes to Canada’s Olympic and World Rugby 7s Circuit teams.”
As a player, Patterson won three National Championships while representing BC and played for Canada from 2009-2012. Following her playing career she was named coach of the Capilano RFC’s Women’s Premier team, and has been at the helm since 2013. She also served as Head Coach of the BC Rugby U18 Women’s 7s team at the 2015 Las Vegas Invitational 7s tournament.
“I would like to thank to BC Rugby and Onni Group for establishing this exciting female 7s program,” said Patterson. “I’m very confident that our athletes will see a huge benefit both in the months and years to come. It is great to see the level of success enjoyed by BC Elite Youth 7s boys team in recent years, and I trust our new girls team can match that same impressive standard. I believe that the BC Elite Girls 7s program will be a unique opportunity for girls to gain experience in a high-performance environment, further their rugby skills, and provide a springboard for those who want to go on to represent their province and country at the highest levels of the sport.”
The BCEG7’s team is expected to generate strong interest amongst U16-U18 female rugby players throughout the province. Patterson will be based in the Lower Mainland. Team staff will also include Vancouver Island based coach Aaron Frisby, who served as BC U23 Women’s Coach at the 2015 Las Vegas Invitational 7s.
