Good news and bad news for the Shamrocks family on Saturday. The good news was the Intermediate Shamrocks coming up with a 15-9 win in game 1 of their 2-of-3 playoff series against the Maple Ridge Burrards at the Panorama Recreation Centre.
The Intermediate Rocks jumped out to a 7-1 first period lead, increased it to 14-6 after 2 and coasted a bit in the third as the Burrards outscored them 3-1 in the final 20 minutes. Unofficially it was rookie Ben Preston leading the way with 3 goals and 4 assists while Marshal King chipped in 2 goals and 5 helpers. Eddie Smith also had a pair of goals with singles coming from Braylon Lumb, Liam Finnigan, Brad McCulley, Taylor Martin, Colten Merilainen and Jake Campbell. Game 2 of the series will be played in Maple Ridge next Saturday, July 25 with game 3, if required back at the Q Centre on Sunday, the 26th.
For the Jr. Rocks it was bad news as their season came to an end at the hands of the Delta Islanders. The Islanders swept the best-of-five series winning game 3 by an 11-7 score. The game was close after the first period with the visitors holding a 4-2 lead but they doubled it to 8-4 after 40 minutes and the teams scored 3 times each in the final period. For the Shamrocks, McLean Chicquen and Ryan Lewis each had a pair of goals while Jake Cullen, Matt Hamilton and Cole Pickup had singles. Charles Claxton made 43 saves as the Shamrocks were outshot 54-45 in the game. The Islanders now have the unenviable task of taking on defending champion Coquitlam Adanacs who also swept their series against the New Westminster Salmonbellies.
