VICTORIA, B.C.- Former University of Victoria Vikes swimmers Alec Page, Hilary Caldwell, and Ryan Cochrane all captured medals for Canada at the Pan American Games in Toronto, Ont. Cochrane set new Pan American records in the men’s 400-m and 1500-m freestyle, while Caldwell won gold and broke the Pan American record in the women’s 200-m backstroke.

Olympian Caldwell captured Canada’s second gold medal in swimming on July 15. The 24-year-old swam the 200-m backstroke in 2:08.22 to break the Pan American record, formerly held by American Elizabeth Pelton by 0.77 seconds. Fellow Canadian teammate Dominique Bouchard followed in second place while American Clara Smiddy rounded out the podium.

Caldwell also raced in the 100-m backstroke just missing the podium in a very close race that seperated first place and the fifth spot by just one second. The White Rock, B.C. native swam a time of 1:01.01 to finish in fifth-place.

On the men’s side, Olympians Alec Page and Ryan Cochrane swam together in the men’s 4×200-m freestyle relay to capture a bronze medal for Canada. The Canadian team swam a time of 7:17.33 to capture third place behind Brazil and the United States.

Two-time Olympian Cochrane then swam the 400-m freestyle in a gold medal-winning time of 3:48.29, breaking American Matt Patton’s Pan American record of 3:49.77 which was set in the 2007. In his final event of the Games, Cochrane shattered another Pan American record, as the 26-year-old finished the 1500-m freestyle in 15:06.40, a time that was six seconds faster than American Chip Peterson’s record also set back in 2007.

Competing in three other events, Page barely missed the podium in the men’s 200-m butterfly, finishing the event in a time of 1:58.01 to finish in fourth. In the men’s 400-m Individual Medley (IM), Page finished in fifth place with a time of 4:18.61 while in the men’s 200-m freestyle he finished the B Final in time of 1:49.86 to sit in ninth place overall.
