LANGLEY, British Columbia – Trinity Western University alumnus Fiona Benson (Dawson Creek, B.C.) will represent Canada in the 800m at the 2015 IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China Aug. 22-30 as she becomes the first Spartan or former Spartan to compete at the senior track and field championships.
The reigning Canadian champion in the 800m – Benson captured the national title earlier this month in Edmonton – will return to China to compete in an IAAF championships for the second time this year, having represented Canada, and finished 68th overall, at the 2015 World Cross Country Championships in late March.
Benson is currently ranked second in Canada with a season’s and personal best time of 1:59.94, which she posted at the Portland Track Festival in mid-June. Her season’s best time has her ranked 21st in the IAAF rankings.
Prior to the 2015 outdoor season, the four-year Spartan athlete, who graduated this past spring, had a personal best time of 2:08.54. She has since shocked the world as she dropped her personal best time by nearly eight seconds and has continually climbed the 800m ladder. Her time of 1:59.94 at the Portland Track Festival put her in elite company as she became just the fifth Canadian woman in history to post a sub-2:00 time.
Benson qualified for the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto, but was not able to race because she failed to declare her intentions to compete in the event prior to the deadline.
