LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western track and field team will have three athletes donning the Maple Leaf at the 2015 Pan American Junior Championships, as pole vaulter Madison Evans (Calgary), 3000m steeplechaser Caleb DeJong (Winnipeg) and 3000m runner Mirelle Martens (Grande Prairie, Alta.) will represent Canada in Edmonton July 31 to Aug. 2 at Foote Field.
The Spartans trio are all coming off medal-winning performances at the 2015 Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships as both DeJong and Evans captured gold in their respective events, while Martens took home bronze in the 5000m.
Evans enters the meet with an outdoor personal best of 3.80m and an indoor personal best of 3.81m.
DeJong is coming off an impressive gold-medal winning effort at the national championships in which he posted a personal best 3000m steeplechase time of 9:18.05.
Martens, who will join TWU this fall after transferring from Grand Prairie Regional College, qualified for the Pan American Junior Championships thanks to a 3000m race earlier this year in Victoria where she clocked a time of 9:42.08. At the Canadian junior championships, she posted a 5000m time of 17:33.25 to finish third, before an eighth-place finish in the 3000m.
In 2013, the Spartans sent two athletes to the Pan American Junior Championships as current TWU athletes Nathan George (Coquitlam, B.C.) and Regan Yee (South Hazelton, B.C.) represented Canada in the biennial event. George earned a bronze medal with the 4x400m relay team and finished seventh overall in the 400m, while Yee also crossed the line in seventh place in the 3000m steeplechase.
