World No. 3 takes Tour wild card; Toronto player field now features all Top 25 players
Toronto, July 27, 2015 – Tennis Canada announced Monday that world No. 3 Simona Halep has been added to the 2015 Rogers Cup presented by National Bank player field, set to take place August 8-16 at Aviva Centre in Toronto. As a year-end Top 20 player from 2014, Halep qualifies for a Top 20 wild card that is reserved for competitors who don’t originally enter a tournament.
“We are so pleased that Simona has opted to compete at Rogers Cup this year,” said Karl Hale, Rogers Cup Toronto tournament director. “Simona is a dynamic and exciting athlete who has achieved so much success over the past few seasons and we know our fans will be happy to see her. With Simona in the draw, we now have all the top stars of the WTA confirmed to be in Toronto, which means we are set for yet another thrilling week of competitive tennis.”
Halep’s inclusion in the player field means that all Top 25 players from the WTA will be competing for the title at Rogers Cup this summer. Last year’s Roland Garros finalist, the Romanian holds 11 WTA titles and won her biggest career trophy at Indian Wells earlier this year. She will be competing at Rogers Cup for the first time since 2012, when she made the second round as the world No. 48.
“I’m really looking forward to returning to Canada and playing Rogers Cup,” Halep said. “I haven’t played there in a couple years so I can’t wait to perform for all my Canadian fans – and I know there are a lot of Romanians in Toronto too! I’m ready to compete and excited for a great tournament.”
