BC Rugby and Canadian Direct Insurance (CDI) are pleased to announce the release of the men’s premier schedule for the fall of 2015.

The competition will look significantly different from last year due to a new structure. Seattle Saracens, Meraloma Rugby Club (Vancouver) and Westshore Velox (Langford) will join last year’s Canadian Direct Insurance Premier League clubs in fall Premier League qualification round, which kicks off on September 19th. Following qualification, the top six clubs from the Lower Mainland pool and the top three from Vancouver Island will advance to the full Canadian Direct Insurance Premier League competition, scheduled to begin in January, 2016.

Lower Mainland

A total of 7 teams from the Lower Mainland will compete in a seven week qualification round, set to begin on Saturday, September 19th. Following this round, the top six teams will compete for the Mainland Cup, with playoffs starting November 14, 2015. Those same top six clubs will also automatically advance to the Canadian Direct Insurance Premier League, to be held from January 2016 – April 2016. The 7th ranked team will join the Okanagan Spring Brewery League in mid November.

The teams from the Lower Mainland are:

  • Burnaby Lake RC
  • Capilano RFC
  • Meraloma Rugby Club
  • Seattle Saracens
  • UBC Old Boy Ravens
  • UBC Thunderbirds*
  • Vancouver Rowing Club

*2015 Canadian Direct Insurance Premier League champions

Vancouver Island

A total of 4 teams from Vancouver Island will compete in a twelve week qualification round, also slated to begin September 19th. Following this round, the top three teams will advance to the Canadian Direct Insurance Premier League, to be held from January 2016 – April 2016, while the top two will contest the Barnard Cup on December 5.

The teams from Vancouver Island are:

  • Castaway Wanderers
  • James Bay Athletic Association
  • UVic Vikes
  • Westshore Velox RFC
Key dates to circle on the calendar:

September 19 – opening day

September 19 – Westshore Velox vs Castaway Wanderers. The battle to stay above the relegation line on the Island is likely to be contested between these two teams. New-look Westshore are hoping to make a splash and CW will want avoid last season’s slow start.

October 3 – Seattle vs Meraloma – these two teams were extremely well matched last season in Division 1, playing very entertaining matches at each encounter. This game could ultimately dictate which team stays down and which team moves up.

October 3 – Capilano vs Burnaby Lake – this is Capilano’s annual cancer fundraiser day. Caps’s edged Burnaby Lake by the narrowest of margins in this fixture last year, with a potential game winning kick hitting the upright on the final play.

October 17 – UBC vs Burnaby Lake – the Lakers were bounced from the playoffs last year at the hands of upstarts UBC. Can they exact their revenge?

November 7 – It’s the last chance for Lower Mainland teams to get above the relegation line.

November 28 – Westhore will have a game in hand heading into the final week of qualifications. Will it come down to the wire? If so, they’ll face a difficult task against James Bay.

December 5 – Mainland Cup Final and Barnard Cup Final.
