The Huskies and Golden Hawks lone meeting came in the 2005 Vanier Cup. Laurier won the national title game 24-23 in Hamilton, Ont.

The Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks turnaround season led them to a playoff berth in 2014. The Golden Hawks finished last season sixth in the OUA standings with a 4-4 record after going 1-7 in 2013. A loss to the Western Mustangs in the OUA quarter-final ended their 2014 campaign.

Returning to this year’s squad is 2014 CIS rushing champion Dillon Campbell. The fifth-year running back was the OUA MVP and a Hec Creighton nominee last season after rushing for 1482 yards and 13 majors. In the offseason Campbell was selected by the Toronto Argonauts in the fifth round of the CFL Draft.

Quarterback James Fracas, son of legendary CIS coach Gino Fracas, is set to lead the team. The fourth-year pivot completed 62.3 percent of his passes for 1574 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. Receiver Greg Nyhof hopes to have a breakout year in the receiving corps. Of the 2014 East-West Bowl participant’s 15 receptions in 2014, five were for touchdowns.

Defensive lineman Kwaku Boateng will lead a veteran Laurier defence on Friday night. The third-year pass rusher was second in the OUA in sacks with six last season.

The Saskatchewan Huskies open the 2015 season with plenty of returning fire power on the offensive side of the ball.

Among familiar faces on offence is fourth-year quarterback Drew Burko. Burko led the Canada West in passing touchdowns in 2014 with 21.

After leading the Huskie receiving corps in his first season with the green and white, fifth-year John Trumpy will look to improve on an impressive 35 catches for 495 yards and five touchdowns a season ago. Also poised to make a splash in the passing game are receivers Brydon Ozmun and Mitch Hillis who combined for 60 catches and seven touchdowns.

A committee of running backs, who all racked up over 300 yards on offense on the ground and through the air in 2014 return to the Huskie backfield. Shane Buchanan led the rushing attack with 326 yards, while Jarvis James, Tyler Chow and Andre Lalonde also received significant attempts.

After the graduation of All-Canadian safety Mark Ingram, a pair of fifth-year’s in Dylan Kemp and Chris Friesen will the Saskatchewan defensive backfield. Friesen picked off opposing quarterbacks three times in 2014 while Kemp recorded 30.5 tackles and one interception.

The fifth-year linebacker duo of Geoff Hughes and Dane Bishop return to the Huskie defensive unit. Hughes is the leading tackler returning to the squad with 38 last season. While up front on the defensive line, Saskatchewan welcomes home Saskatoon native and former UBC Thunderbird and Saskatoon Hilltop Donovan Dale. Dale was a two-time CIS All-Canadian at UBC.
