All-Americans assail BC back line in 58-0 debut performance

Nia Toliver sprinted her way to a hat trick before half-time and the All Americans spread the scoring around after that, striding their way to a flashy 58-0 victory over BC Rugby’s under-18 women.

Toliver opened the scoring only seconds into the game, as the ICEF (California) product wrenched her way though a trio of BC tacklers.  Her second try came in similar style a few minutes later, to stake the USA Rugby High School All-Americans to a 10-0 first half lead.

BC seemed poised to cut the deficit, but Shaye Tudor and Danika Elias were both turned away within meters of the All-Americans try line.

As the halftime approached, BC shifted their defensive focus to key in on the speedy Toliver, but that left significant holes elsewhere in the BC tackle line, which the Americans were clinical in exploiting. A pair of quick tries in the first half’s final minutes left the score at 22-0 and gave the game a markedly different complexion heading into the break.

BC shook things up with several reserve players coming into the game to start the second frame, but the Americans continued to dictate play, seemingly scoring at will once the key BC tacklers began to flag under the constant pressure and exertion.

The All-Americans pounded the BC tackle line looking for gaps, and as the BC tacklers poured into support, several potential overlaps began to form on the wings. Time and time again the All-Americans were able to get clean ball and swing passes out the to backs, who then dashed in from distance, including tries by Daz Williams and Becca Jane Rosco. Hannah Lewandowski, Leah Ingold and Adi Tamaivena also scored for the All-Americans.

The BC women, however, deserve praise for playing positive and enterprising rugby. They were largely undone on account of not having the pace and athleticism of their counterparts.

“We learned right away how diverse and amazing their group is,” said BC centre Madi Gold.  “It will be nice for us to have Saturday to team bond, learn from the game today, try to change some things and get back at it on Sunday.”

The result may sting in the short time, but going head to head against a national program is sure to benefit BC’s athletes in their long-term development.

The game marked the first ever performance from the Girls High School All Americans 15s program.

“Their winger who was marking me (Laura Pfleiderer) was really good and brought a lot of aggression,” said Toliver. “BC was definitely a good competition and a great first game for us.”

The two times line up for the rematch on Sunday at Brentwood College School. Kickoff is an early one at 9:00am.
