Kamloops, BC—The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men’s soccer team went through their own exhibition tournament undefeated.
The WolfPack won all three matches they played including a 4-1 victory over the Langara College Falcons (PACWEST) on Sunday (Aug 23) at Hillside Stadium.
The WolfPack led 2-1 at half time as they got a pair of goals from Ryan Glanville (Williams Lake, BC)
His first came at the nine minute mark when Finlay McPhie (Vernon, BC) sent the ball up field and Glanville tucked it into the lower right corner.
Glanville added the second goal a minute later.
In the second half, Oriol Torres (Barcelona, Spain) and Glanville with his third of the afternoon rounded out the scoring for Thompson Rivers. Glanville’s hat trick goal came in the 51 st minute off a corner kick which Torres took.
Clayde Harsany (High River, AB) got the victory in goal.
“We put a young line up out there today to give some of our rookies a chance to prove themselves,” said WolfPack head coach John Antulov. “ I thought there was a little bit of a gap for about 25 minutes but for the most part we played a good game.”
“I thought during that lapse for 25 minutes we were giving the ball away,” the coach added. “We were fortunate to have Ryan Glanville make a couple goals out of virtually nothing. He is one of those guys who will be able to turn the tide for us this year. We talked about it at half time and the guys came out and played well.”
Antulov says the veterans on his roster pretty well have their roles defined but he is impressed with how his rookies have fared in the exhibition campaign as well. “ I think we know who our guys are going to be. Our young guys are coming out here and putting the pressure on. They are learning and developing. Where they will be in the next three weeks, I still don’t know. We are liking what we are seeing in their progression.”
The WolfPack raised their preseason record to 5 and 1. They close out their exhibition season next weekend in Kelowna against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies and the UBCO Heat. The Huskies might be replaced by the Douglas College Royals (PACWEST). The Royals were defeated by TRU 3-0 on Saturday (Aug 22), but they tied UBCO 3-3 on Sunday. The other match on this day had the UNBC Timberwolves take the MacEwan Griffins 2-0.
TRU will open its 2015-16 Canada West season on September 12 th at Hillside when they entertain the Trinity Western University Spartans. Kick off is2 pm. The game is ‘alumni day’ and coincides with TRU’s 45th anniversary celebrations.
