Charlottetown, PEI (— University of Prince Edward Island Men’s Soccer coach Lewis Page is proud to announce that six of PEI soccer’s top young players have committed to play at UPEI in 2015.)
Mark Smith, Sam Smiley, Nacho Sanchez, Jake Deighan, Austin Mckenzie, and Noah Bitar are all standout local players who have developed their soccer skills in the PEI soccer system. All these players have represented their schools, their local club,s and their province with great success at the regional and national level.
UPEI Men’s Soccer has a strong tradition of building the foundations of its teams on PEI-produced talent.
Coach Page believes these players will carry on that tradition, “This group of players makes us better in every part of the field. Austin Mckenzie and Sam Smiley will contribute to our attacking play, Nacho Sanchez and Noah Bitar will strengthen our midfield ‘engine room’, and Mark Smith and Jake Deighan will compete for places on our back line.”
Mark Smith says, “I am excited to be attending UPEI and to continue my soccer career with the Panthers. I hope to continue to work hard and to improve my game by playing with some of the best in the country. UPEI’s success last year, having placed third in the country, is evidence of the quality of the program and players.”
Sam Smiley looks forward to the fall as well. “I’m excited to wear the Panther crest and contribute to the the same team my dad captained back in the 80s.”
The following shows what program each is enrolled in at UPEI and what High School previously attended:
Mackenzie, Deighan, and Bitar, all Charlottetown Rural graduates; Smith, a Colonel Gray alumnus; and Sanchez, from Bluefield High School, are enrolled in the Bachelor of Business Administration program at UPEI.
The first exhibition action at home will be the Mulligan Cup next weekend, – when the UPEI Men’s and Women’s Soccer teams take to the pitch.
