The Portland Winterhawks topped the Tri-City Americans 3-2 in overtime Saturday in preseason action in Everett, Washington.
Portland opened the scoring 11:35 into the game when Alex Overhardt fired a wrist shot past Americans’ netminder Nicholas Sanders for a 1-0 lead, the lone goal of the first period. Following the goal, Evan Sarthou replaced Sanders in net for Tri-City.
After a scoreless second period, the Americans evened the game at 1-1 on a goal from Brian Williams 2:01 into the third. Tri-City’s Taylor Vickerman then added a power play marker at 9:28 for a 2-1 Americans lead.
Portland forward Brett Clayton banged a rebound past Sarthou to tie it at 2-2 at 17:31, setting up the 3-on-3 overtime.
In the extra frame, Paul Bittner wired a wrist shot in at 1:48, but initially it was called no goal. The goal then went to a review, and was reversed, for a 3-2 Portland victory.
Michael Bullion stopped 44 of 46 shots he faced. Tri-City’s Sanders allowed one goal on 14 Portland shots, while Sarthou allowed two goals on 19 shots he faced from the Hawks.
The Hawks are back in action tomorrow evening when they take on the tournament host Everett Silvertips at 7 p.m.
