CALGARY, Alta. – Nearly 50 of the nation’s top women’s hockey players are gathering at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary next week as a first step to earning a spot on Canada’s National Women’s Team that will be going for gold on home ice at the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship in Kamloops, B.C. this spring.

Hockey Canada announced Thursday the 47 players attending Canada’s National Women’s Team Fall Festival, taking place Sept. 13-20 at the Markin MacPhail Centre at WinSport’s Canada Olympic Park. The roster includes five goaltenders, 14 defencemen and 28 forwards, who will be split up into Red and White teams for practices and intrasquad games.

The camp will serve as an important evaluation opportunity for Canada’s National Women’s Team coaching staff, including head coach Laura Schuler and assistant coaches Howie Draper and Dwayne Gylywoychuk, and goaltending coach Brad Kirkwood, alongside Melody Davidson, Hockey Canada’s general manager of national women’s team programs and Gina Kingsbury, Hockey Canada’s director of women’s national teams.

“We’re looking forward to having these 47 players come together in Calgary. The depth of this group is evident, and it was no easy decision selecting invites for camp,” said Davidson. “The 10 days in Calgary are a great opportunity for players to show us how they can fit in now or in the future with Canada’s National Women’s Team.”

Following Canada’s National Women’s Team Fall Festival, players will be monitored at the Women’s National Team January camp, Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team and Development Team events,  and international events, such as the 2015 4 Nations Cup in Sundsvall, Sweden, as well as with their club teams during the 2015-16 season. These evaluations will assist coaches and scouts in selecting the team that will represent Canada at the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship in Kamloops, B.C., from March 28-April 4.
