KENT, September 9, 2015 – Seattle Thunderbirds general manager Russ Farwell today announced center Mathew Barzal has signed a three-year entry level contract with the New York Islanders.
Barzal was selected by the Islanders in the first round, 16th overall, of the 2015 NHL Draft.
“We are very happy for Mathew and this is a huge accomplishment in his career,” said Farwell. “He is one of those players fans love to watch and it will be fun seeing him develop as his career continues to unfold over the next few years. We wish him all the best as he heads off to the Islanders training camp this week.”
Barzal attended the Islanders Development Camp in July. He is currently with the Islanders at their Training Camp.
Barzal, an 18-year-old from Coquitlam, British Columbia, had 57 points on 12 goals and 45 assists last season. He had four goals and four assists in six playoff games.
In April Barzal won a bronze medal with Team Canada at the Under-18 World Championships in Zug and Lucerne, Switzerland.
In two seasons with the T-Birds Barzal has 111 points on 26 goals and 85 assists in 103 games.
The T-Birds next preseason appearance will be in Kennewick at the Red Lion Hotels’ Preseason Tournament at the Toyota Center. The T-Birds will play the Kootenay Ice on Friday, September 11, at 3pm and face the Tri-City Americans on Saturday, September 12, at 7:05pm
The T-Birds will conclude their preseason schedule with a home game against the Victoria Royals on Friday, September 18, at 7:35pm at ShoWare Center.
The T-Birds open the 2015-16 season in Vancouver against the Giants onFriday, September 25, at 7:30pm at Pacific Coliseum.
The T-Birds home opener for the 2015-16 season is Saturday, October 3, against the Prince George Cougars at 7:05pm at ShoWare Center.
