Canada’s Under 21 Men’s Team Advances at Worlds
Tijuana, Mexico, September 13, 2015 – Canada’s Under 21 team defeated Mexico for a second victory and second place in its pool. This means that the Canadian team advances to the round of eight at the FIVB Men’s U21 World Championship.
“We are very excited to stay in Tijuana (for the next round),” said Canada’s coach John Barrett after the win over the host country. “Tonight there was a lot of stress on both teams, but I’m happy for our success.”
The Canadian team beat Mexico in straight sets (25-17, 25-20, 25-20) with RyanNickifor leading the way with 23 points, followed by Brandon Koppers with nine.
Ridl Alexis Garay was the top scorer for Mexico with 11 points, while Alan Gabriel Martinez finished with nine.
Canada will be only NORCECA (North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation) representative team in second round.
Turkey also advances as winners of this pool, with a three wins and no losses. Mexico now plays in a round to establish rankings at the State Auditorium in Mexicali.The competition features 16 teams and will run over eight days with two rest days. The teams are divided into four pools of four teams each and will play a round-robin tournament. The top two teams from each pool will then be split into two further pools of four (Pools E and F), with the bottom two teams from the first round also divided into two pools of four (Pools G and H).The top two teams from Pools E and F will qualify for the semifinals and finals, with the bottom two facing off in a playoff to be classified from fifth to eighth. The winners from Pools G and H will have a playoff for the ninth to 12th classification with the bottom two teams from the same pool moving onto a playoff for 13th to 16th.
