VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s golf team had a strong start to their 2015-16 season currently sitting third at the Saint Martin’s Invitational tournament in Olympia, Wash. Second-year Vike Lawren Rowe sits atop the standings after an opening round score of 69, while the Vikes shot a collective 293 at Olympia Country and Golf Club on Sept. 18.
Rowe is currently tied for first with Simon Fraser’s Marcus Brown. The UBC Thunderbirds, led by current third place golfer Nate Ollis, are the leaders entering the final day after a team score of 287. Thunderbirds Jack Wood and Andrew Harrison are tied for seventh, boosting UBC’s score.
For the Vikes, Matthew Broughton was the second-best Vike behind Rowe after the fourth year shot 74 and currently sits tied for 21st. Second-year Vikes Andrew Funk and Mike Griffin both shot 75 and sit tied for 31st, while rookie Jake Hamilton shot 77 in his debut for Victoria.
“I was relatively pleased with the first round but we did leave a lot of shots out there, particularly on par threes,” said Justin Clews, Vikes men’s golf head coach on the team’s opening tournament. “All of the guys are hitting it okay but we need to improve around the greens for the second round this afternoon.”In the team standings Simon Fraser (292) is in second behind UBC (287), while Western Washington and Dixie State University share third with the Vikes (293).”Lawren had it to 5-under today at one point but gave a few coming back in,” added Clews of last year’s UVic Rookie of the Year. “The team should improve on their secound round and we are hoping to get two of them to come in under part to better our team score.”
The Vikes will continue play tomorrow, Sept. 19, with another 18 holes in Olympia, Wash. The Vikes will get plenty of tuning up time as the team will immediately head to Bellingham, Wash. for the three-round and two-day tournament hosted by Western Washington, set for Sept. 21-22. The Western Washington Invitational will include 36 holes on Sept. 21 and 18 holes on Sept. 22.
