Winterhawks Close Preseason With 7-4 Win in Everett

The Portland Winterhawks closed out their preseason schedule Friday with a 7-4 win in Everett against the Silvertips. The Hawks finished the preseason slate at 4-3.

It took just 1:50 for the Hawks to get on the board as Skyler McKenzie struck early for a 1-0 lead. McKenzie then scored again at 8:35 with his second of the period as he gave Portland a 2-0 advantage. Everett’s Remi Laurencelle put the Silvertips on the board at 11:25, but the Hawks regained a two-goal advantage at 15:13 when Ryan Hughes scored off a rush for the 16-year-old rookie’s first preseason goal and a 3-1 lead going into the second. 

It remained a two-goal game until the 15:09 mark of the second when Hawks defenseman Blake Heinrich scored extend the lead to 4-1. 

Everett made a push early in the third when Matt Fonteyne and Carson Stadnyk scored 1:29 apart to get within one at 4-3. Midway through the frame Everett’s Brandon Ralph nearly scored as the puck caromed off both posts, but the Hawks came back the other way on an odd-man rush that finished with Heinrich scoring his second of the game at 10:52to give the Hawks a 5-3 lead. 

Cody Glass added an empty net goal to make it 6-3, but Everett’s Ralph batted in a rebound late in the third to make it 6-4. Portland’s Jack Flaman finally capped the scoring with the Hawks’ second empty net goal for a 7-4 final.

Michael Bullion picked up the win in net with 43 saves on 47 shots. 

McKenzie and Heinrich each finished with two goals and an assist for three points, while Hughes, Glass and Flaman had two points apiece.

With the preseason now complete, the Winterhawks will open the 2015-16 regular season next Friday in Victoria against the Royals.
