LANGLEY, British Columbia – For the second time in three nights, the Trinity Western men’s volleyball beat visiting Mount Royal, with the Spartans earning a 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-19) win Saturday at the Langley Events Centre to improve to 2-0 in preseason action.

After taking five sets to knock off the Cougars Thursday night, the Spartans made much shorter work of MRU Saturday on route to a convincing three-set win.

“It was a really good match for us and the guys played their best match of the season,” said Spartans coach Ben Josephson. “A lot of the things that we have been working on showed themselves as we wanted them to. I thought we had great serving performances from a number of athletes. Our offence clicked the way we have been training and our reception held up well tonight. The guys are really improving on a day by day basis, which is all you can ask in preseason.

“We showed a lot of the identity that this team is going to have. We showed a lot of communication and togetherness, which was a point of emphasis coming into the weekend.”

Saturday’s win capped a busy three days for the Spartans, in which TWU played five matches, including two preseason games and three scrimmages.

The Spartans will see the Cougars twice more next week as they will play MRU Oct. 1 at Josephson’s hometown of Strathmore, Alta., before kicking off the Dino Cup against the same Calgarian side on Oct. 2 at the University of Calgary. The Spartans will then play Calgary in the Dino Cup’s evening tilt on Oct. 2. They will wrap up the Calgary tournament Oct. 3 against Saskatchewan.
