LEICESTER, ENGLAND – Head coach Kieran Crowley has called in Patrick Parfrey to Canada’s Rugby World Cup 31-man squad in place of Connor Braid.

Braid started Saturday’s World Cup match against Italy but was injured inside the opening 15 minutes where he suffered a broken jaw and a concussion. Braid was playing in his first World Cup. In 19 test matches, he has two tries, two conversions and four penalties.

“It’s an unfortunate situation for Connor to have to end his Rugby World Cup early, but these things happen in rugby and we know he’ll be back in no time,” said Crowley.

“Pat was a logical choice for us because he brings a lot the team. He can play a number of positions in the backfield and has played for us on a number of tours over the last three years, including the Pacific Rugby Championship earlier this year in Fiji.”

Parfrey has seven test caps for Canada, starting two of those games. His last test cap came against Romania, Canada’s final Pool D opponents, in November of last year. He made his test debut in May 2013 against the USA in Edmonton. He’s yet to register a test try. The St. John’s, Newfoundland native, played for the Atlantic Rock at this year’s Canadian Rugby Championships in Calgary.

The 23-year-old has also played for Canada’s Sevens team the past two years after making his debut during the 2013-14 campaign where he played three tournaments. He also played in three tournaments during the 2014-15 season.

“It’s a dream come true for me to be called in to Canada’s 31-man squad for the Rugby World Cup. It’s tough that it comes due to an injury to Connor, and I wish him a speedy recovery,” said Parfrey.

Parfrey found out of his selection while on field for the Swilers Rugby Club midway through the second half against The Dogs in Newfoundland last weekend.

“We had just scored a try against The Dogs when one of the facility staff members interrupted the game to get me off the field. At first my teammates were upset, but then both teams cheered me on when they found out I was off to England to meet the team.”

Canada’s Men’s Team is training in Leicester at the moment before facing France on Thursday at Stadiummk in Milton Keynes.

Thursday’s test match can be seen live on TSN at 8pm local time (3pm ET/12pm PT)
