CALGARY, Alta. – The showdowns are set for the 2016 Esso Cup, when the host Weyburn Gold Wings will open against the team from the West during the primetime game at 7 p.m. MT on April 17.

The 2016 Esso Cup, Canada’s National Female Midget Championship, represents a collaboration between Hockey Canada and the Saskatchewan Hockey Association who formally released the game schedule on Monday. The tournament, set for April 17-23, 2016 will take place at Crescent Point Place in Weyburn, Sask. This is just the second time in the history of the event that Saskatchewan is hosting (Regina, 2010).

“It’s always exciting to return to Saskatchewan where the passion of hockey fans across the province is among the best in the country,” said Dean McIntosh, senior director of events and properties with Hockey Canada. “The Esso Cup puts the spotlight on the best in female midget hockey, and we know the host committee will put on a top-notch event.”

The Weyburn Gold Wings, who won Esso Cup gold in 2014, will be joined by teams from five other regions: Atlantic, Ontario, Pacific, Quebec, and West.

“After months of meetings of the organizing committee in preparation for the April 2016 Esso Cup, it’s exciting to announce that the six-team schedule has been approved and we can now share it with our community and the fans we expect to visit from across the country,” said Co-Chair Dale Renz. “The next important milestone will be our official ticket sales drive, which begins October 9, and tickets will be available for sale on October 10 at the Weyburn Southern Range Gold Wing home-opener at Crescent Point Place. We are also actively recruiting for volunteers, and will have sign-up sheets available on October 10. Our Esso Cup committee is looking for approximately 100-150 volunteers for jobs both big and small. We are confident that the residents of Weyburn will join us to make this a fantastic experience for the teams and the hockey fans who will be visiting our city for this fantastic national tournament in the spring.”

Action will get underway on Sunday, April 17 at 12 p.m. MT (11 a.m. PT) when teams from Quebec and the Atlantic provinces meet in the tournament opener. Pacific and Ontario will meet in the second game of the day, while the Gold Wings and the team from the West round out opening-day action with their 7 p.m. start.
