NANAIMO, B.C. – Austin Wilk scored the game winner at 12:03 of the third period and the Victoria Cougars added two empty net goals for a 4-1 victory over the Nanaimo Buccaneers on Thursday night.
Also scoring for Victoria was Cody Hodges, Ryan Carson, and Brett Lervold.
It was 0-0 after one period and 1-1 after two.
Jordan Levesque scored the lone goal for the Buccaneers.
Cougars’ Anthony Ciurro made 24 saves for the win. Nanaimo’s Alex Orth stopped 18-of-20 shots in defeat.
Lervold finished the game with three points while Carson, Hodges, and Wilk each produced a goal and an assist.
Victoria was missing some key players in John Kretzschmar, Kameron Fink, PJ Heger, Dom Kolbeins, Lane Vandewetering, and Sean Wendlandt. Called up to plug some of the holes were Nick Looysen and Tyler Smith.
After missing the first seven games of the season, Brandon Tutte was back in the lineup and picked up an assist on the Cougars fourth goal.
Both teams were dreadful with the man advantage. Victoria went 0-for-3 while the Buccaneers went 0-for-6.
Next game for the Cougars is Wednesday, October 7 against the Westshore Wolves. Game time at The Q Centre, located at 1767 Old Island Highway, is 7:00 p.m.
